Flint’s dramatic history as the birthplace of General Motors comes to life at Sloan Museum. The museum’s newest history gallery, "Flint and the American Dream," takes visitors on a fascinating journey through Flint in the 20th century - from the birth of General Motors to the present. The gallery is packed with over 600 artifacts and photographs, including rare antique automobiles, colorful neon signs, period clothing, household furnishings, commercial goods and original film footage from each decade.
For the antique car buff, there are more cars in the Pierson Automotive Gallery, which showcases the museum’s own unique collection of vehicles, as well as cars from private collections with a new exhibit each June. The 19th Century Gallery showcases Flint’s early history. Visitors can see a Woodland Indian wigwam and exhibits on fur trading, pioneer life, lumbering and carriage making. The Science Discovery Center features hands-on exhibits, discovery boxes and exciting demonstrations. The Hometown Gallery offers hands-on history experiences. Snacks and soft drinks are available in the Halfway Cafe. The museum store offers a fine selection of gift items and Michigan memorabilia. The Sloan Museum Antique Auto Fair, one of the largest antique auto shows in the Midwest with nearly 1,000 antique, classic, and special interest vehicles, takes place the fourth weekend in June. Home of the award-winning Flint Youth Theatre. A fully-equipped, proscenium-style auditorium located on the Flint Cultural Center campus. It is an ideal facility for all types of theatrical productions, concerts, dance recitals, lectures, demonstrations and meetings. The stage, which measures 28 feet in width by 30 feet in depth by 16 feet in height, is fully equipped with a fly system, drapes, extensive theatrical lighting system, state of the art sound system and wing space. A prop storage room, two dressing rooms and scene shop with a loading dock are also available while the green room lounge with kitchen amenities can also be used to hold small meetings or for food preparation for receptions held in the theater lobby. Stage technicians, house manager, security and custodial services are available. The facility is available for rental year-round, is fully air-conditioned and wheel chair accessible. Founded over 75 years ago, the Flint Institute of Arts is a museum dedicated to collecting, preserving and presenting art of the highest quality from around the world. Today, the FIA's collection includes over 7,000 works of art, ranging from important American and European paintings and decorative arts to Native American, African, and Asian artifacts. In addition to installations of the permanent collection, many special exhibitions are scheduled throughout the year. Named for the pioneer wagon manufacturer who was primarily responsible for bringing Buick Motor Company to Flint, The Whiting, which recently received a $6.8 million dollar facelift, is praised as one of the most elegant concert halls in the nation.
