PURE SUMMER FUN
IN GREATER FLINT!!
CROSSROADS VILLAGE
AND
THE HUCKLEBERRY RAILROAD
One Hundred Acres,
One Hundred Years of History
Step into Crossroads Village and experience life as it was in the small towns scattered across Flint and Genesee County more than 100 years ago. With its 35 historic structures, Villagers, in period dress, welcome visitors, of all ages, into their homes, mills and shops dating back to the 1800s. Follow the wooden walks to the post office, schoolhouse, the General Store, cider mill and Victorian-era homes.
Experience the "modern" way travelers moved across the county, and the country, in the early 1900s during a 40-minute scenic ride on the narrow gauge Huckleberry Railroad. It's an authentic journey back to a time when huckleberries grew alongside the track, and the coaches, with their etched glass and leather seats, offered a bit of elegance for travelers as they rolled through the countryside. Also, pick your pony and hold on tight for a ride on a 1912 Charles W. Parker carousel or take a 45-minute excursion on the beautiful Genesee Belle, a paddlewheel riverboat popular during Mark Twain's time.
Recapture the flavor of the past, in the present, when Crossroads Village celebrates a variety of exciting themed weekends from American Heritage and Family Life to their popular Railfans weekend, when guests get the opportunity to actually tour the Village's Train Shop, which is only open to the public on this weekend.
Crossroads Village and the Huckleberry Railroad is open Wednesday through Sunday, and holidays, May 29 through September 6, 2010 - from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Enjoy award-winning traveling exhibits, an interactive Discovery Center and diverse educational activities all year long. Experience the dynamic changes that helped shape the city of Flint during the last century.
Visit Sloan now through September 6 and experience "From Here to There." Trains, planes, boats, automobiles and many other modes of tansportation were designed over the ages to convey travelers ever more rapidly from point "A" to point "B". Explore the science behind different methods of locomotion. Lift, launch and levitate as you experiment with hands-on exhibits that make learning about gravity, friction and the laws of motion fun. Visitors can turn up the heat to launch a colorful hot air balloon and adjust wind speed to form fabric into an airfoil.
While visiting the Sloan Museum, be sure to take the time to walk through Sloan's Buick Gallery and Research Center featuring over 25 classic and concept Buicks, Chevrolets and other locally built automobiles including a 1951 XP-300, a 1954 Wildcat II, a 1977 Phantom (concept cars) and a Hellcat Tank Destroyer built by Buick during World War II.
Visitors can also relax with an old glass bottle of Coke at the 1940s Soda Fountain of Mackenzie's Drug Store, pose for a photograph behind the wheel of the Center's climb-on car, and observe the staff and volunteers as they work on the Center's automotive collection in their new vehicle observation and restoration shop.
After visiting the Sloan Museum and Buick Gallery and Research Center, stroll across the street to the Flint Institute of Arts, one of Michigan’s largest and most enduring fine arts museums. Now through September 26, visit the Flint Institute of Arts and view their own personal exhibit "Recent Acquisitions to the FIA's Permanent Collection." Many are not aware, but the FIA relies on gifts of artwork to form much of their permanent collections. Over the past three years, the FIA has acquired many works of art on paper, which makes up this colorful, unique exhibit.
If you plan to visit FIA September 12 through December 7, be sure to view their traveling exhibit"Unbroken Ties: Dialogues in Cuban Art." This exhibition, which is made up of 56 works of art by 41 different artists, reveals the existence of an acutely Cuban point of view, based on shared concerns and is illustrated by a series of comparisons and contrasts between individual works of art stressing their direct or indirect thematic linkage. The selected works represent three distinct groups of Cuban-born artists: men and women who were born on the island, but developed professionally abroad, artists who reached artistic maturity and later immigrated to the U.S. and a younger group of artists who not only studied in their homeland but still reside there. The exhibit consists of paintings, sculptures, photographs, graphic works, videos and installations.
Discounted, overnight packages are available to the Sloan Museum, Buick Gallery and the Flint Institute of Arts. Visit "Overnight Pure FunPaks" for discounted admission tickets and overnight accommodations.
